Writing was much easier before I found out everything else that was involved with self-publishing. Why does there have to be a strategy? Why can’t I just write and click a button and my story goes out to the world, reaching all those who would be remotely interested in a metaphysical, philosophical, crazy, silly love story?
So I’ve changed things up and put my books back in contract with Amazon, adding them to the Kindle Unlimited pile again. They seemed to do well there when first released, but I’ve been lackluster in my motivation to keep up marketing pushes and strategies. (I’m busy writing here, eh?)
But there’s more to it than that. The marketing, self-publishing side of things can be intimidating. I’m terrible at self-promotion. I can’t even describe my books to guys who ask me about them when I’m out on a date. I shy away and scoff *how personal!* (Back off bucko!)
The reality is, I’m just not good at it. I like writing. I like developing the story. I like my ideas. But I’m not a salesperson. I don’t want to sell my story, I just want to write it! I’m not a strategist.
I have to apologize to any poor sucker who has followed this blog: I go at my own pace. My pitches are terrible, my marketing and people skills are lacking, and I have to force myself to write on this blog because expressing myself personally just doesn’t come naturally. But damn it… I’ll do my best to meet my deadline to finish my trilogy by the end of the year. I write honestly and from the heart, and hopefully you’ll enjoy the actual story regardless of all that, and all the ‘professional’ skills I lack. I’m doing my best to balance after all… isn’t that what the Statera is all about?! 😉
P.S. The final book is getting closer to it’s conclusion ❤

You’ve lit on the toughest part of being a self-published author, I think. If you’re writing, you’re not engaged in the business of pushing your writing out–and vice versa. I’m in the opposite camp at the moment–too much blogging and not enough writing. Great post, and best of luck with the writing. That’s the stuff that really matters!

I skipped all that whining about the artist’s suffering and rushed to the important part: that the 3rd book in the Statera series will come soon, soon… It’s creeping steadily ahead, sure as a tidal wave of cold honey or a glacier on steroids. Balance? Yep. I keep a balanced view of things. We have a suffering artist on one side; my need to read the 3rd book in this metaphysical love-story thingy on the other. Nope; no balance. Tilts to the reader’s need, not the writer’s. Get back to work lady.
